Iceland has been  the scene of many films and TV series. Perhaps most famously, Iceland played a big role in the acclaimed TV series Game of Thrones. Iceland was also featured in recent Star Wars films, The Force Awakens and Rogue One. Interstellar and Noah were also filmed in Iceland. Dettifoss looked really cool in Prometheus. But there is also an Iceland themed themed TV series and an Iceland theme film on Netflix.

Katla erupts on Netflix

The TV series ‘Katla’ is directed by Iceland’s best-known director, Baltasar Kormákur. The film is by comedian Will Ferrell and is about Iceland competing in the Eurovision song contest.

The awesome landscape of south Iceland plays a key role

Baltasar Kormákur is the man behind the film Everest and the hit TV series Trapped. The main star of the Katla series on Netflix  is no other than music Star GDRN.

The plot sounds like a cross between sci-fi and fantasy. The town of Vík is the setting of the  Katla TV series. It happens one year after the nearby (and massive) subglacial volcano Katla has erupted. Flooding has forced most of the people away from the town. Only a few remain to provide essential services. But then mysterious elements start to emerge from the melting glacier and cause unforeseen consequences.

The truly impressive landscape of the Icelandic south coast plays a key role in the TV series. The black beach of Reynisfjara is right next to the town of Vík. It is also the home of the Icelandic Lava Show.

Iceland themed Eurovision comedy film

The film ‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga‘ is by Will Ferrell who starred in Anchor Man and the vastly underrated Blades of Glory.  The film is about Icelandic couple from the town of Húsavík  competing in Eurovision. Will Ferrell attended the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest to do research on the competition. There he must have been struck with the Icelandic contestants Hatari.

Rachel McAdams, Demi Lovato and ex Bond actor Pierce Brosnan also star in the film. Pierce Brosnan will play the most handsome Icelander. I suppose Baltasar Kormákur was too busy! Icelandic actors who star in the film are Ólafur Darri Ólafsson of Trapped fame,  Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson who starred in Noah and Game of Thrones and Nína Dögg Filipusdóttir who also starred in Trapped.

FIlmed in the northern town of Húsavík

The Story of Fire Saga is set in the northern town of Húsavík.This beautiful seaside town is right on the Diamond Circle and is famous for whale watching and the home of the GeoSea baths.

In any case, I am not canceling my Netflix subscription, that is for sure!
