Car Rental in Iceland — FAQ
7 questionsWhat is the best car rental company in Iceland?+
It depends on your budget and travel style. Höldur (Europcar Iceland) is the oldest and most established operator, with decades of experience and pickup locations across the country. Go Car Rental offers excellent value with a wide fleet from economy cars to 4×4s. Konvin is a newer, fast-growing option with competitive pricing and great service. All three are trusted Stuck in Iceland partners — subscribe to the newsletter to receive exclusive 10% discount codes for each of them.
Do I need a 4×4 to rent a car in Iceland?+
Not for most routes. A standard 2WD car handles the Ring Road, the Golden Circle, and the South Coast perfectly well in summer. However, if you're planning to drive F-roads into the Highlands, a 4×4 with high ground clearance is legally required — standard cars are not permitted on F-roads. In winter, a 4×4 with winter tyres is strongly recommended regardless of your route.
Can I drive a rental car on F-roads in Iceland?+
Only with a 4×4 vehicle. F-roads are mountain tracks that are only open in summer — typically late June through September — and require four-wheel drive and high clearance. Driving a standard rental car on an F-road is illegal, voids your insurance, and can result in a heavy fine. Always check road.is for current conditions and road openings before heading into the Highlands.
What type of car should I rent for the Ring Road?+
In summer, a standard 2WD car is fine for the Ring Road — the entire route is paved. For a more comfortable experience on gravel side roads and river crossings, a small 4×4 is a worthwhile upgrade. In winter, a 4×4 with winter tyres is strongly recommended as road conditions can change rapidly. All three Stuck in Iceland car rental partners offer a range of vehicle sizes and drivetrain options.
What insurance do I need for renting a car in Iceland?+
All rental cars in Iceland come with basic third-party liability insurance as standard. Most visitors also take out a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) to limit liability for damage to the vehicle. Additional options include gravel protection (SAAP), sand and ash protection, and tyre and windscreen cover — all of which are worth considering given Iceland's road conditions. Check exactly what your chosen policy covers before you drive away.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Iceland?+
The minimum age to rent a car in Iceland is generally 20 years old, though some companies require drivers to be at least 23 for larger vehicles or 4×4s. Drivers under 25 may also be subject to a young driver surcharge. Always check the age requirements with your chosen rental company before booking.
Is renting a car in Iceland good value?+
Yes — especially for trips of five days or more. A rental car gives you complete freedom to travel at your own pace, stop wherever you want, and access areas that tours don't reach. Compared to booking multiple day tours, a self-drive road trip often works out cheaper and far more flexible. Use the Stuck in Iceland newsletter discount codes to save 10% on your rental and stretch your travel budget further.
