Local Guide of Vatnajökull: Glacier Hikes and Ice Caves with a Family Who Knows the Ice

If you want to walk on a glacier in Iceland, walk on it with people who grew up under it. Local Guide of Vatnajökull is a small, family-run guiding company from Öræfi in Southeast Iceland. They have been taking people onto the ice of Vatnajökull since 1991, and the guiding has now passed through three generations of the same family.

Who are Local Guide of Vatnajökull?

Öræfi is the stretch of land between Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, squeezed between Vatnajökull and the sea. For centuries it was one of the most isolated parts of Iceland, cut off by glacial rivers on both sides. The people who live there know the glacier the way farmers know their fields. Local Guide is based at Hofsnes, right in the middle of it.

A few things set them apart:

• Local and family-run. The guides live in the area and work on Vatnajökull year after year. That matters on a glacier, where the ice changes every week.
• Trained and licensed. Their guides are trained through the Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides and in wilderness first aid, and the company holds a tour operator license from the Icelandic Tourist Board.
• Small groups. Several tours cap groups at around eight people per guide. You get time to ask questions, and the guide has time to watch your footing.
• 4×4 to the ice. Modified 4×4 vehicles take you close to the glacier, saving a long walk across the moraine and leaving more time on the ice itself.
• Carbon offset. They offset the carbon from their tours.

• The guides get named. Reviewers mention their guides by name, over and over, and describe them as knowledgeable, down-to-earth, experienced, and safe.
• Safety comes first. People notice the care taken fitting crampons and helmets, and the explanations of how the glacier moves.
• Small groups work. Many reviewers say the small group size made the day feel personal, not like a conveyor belt.
• Good for first-timers. Families and people who had never set foot on a glacier write that they felt looked after.

Summer: glacier hikes from Skaftafell

Summer tours start at the Freysnes service station, a couple of minutes from the Skaftafell Visitor Center in Vatnajökull National Park.

Glacier Encounter

An easy walk on Falljökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. About three hours from start to finish, with roughly an hour on the ice. The one to pick if you have kids with you or have never worn crampons.

Glacier Discovery

A longer hike, about four hours, climbing higher on Falljökull towards its icefall. Groups are small. Moderate effort, but no glacier experience needed.

Winter: ice caves at Jökulsárlón

Winter tours start at the main parking area at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Ice caves form and melt with the seasons, so the season runs roughly from October to March and depends on the weather. No two winters give you the same cave.

Ice Cave Tour

Starts at Jökulsárlón. A 4×4 ride and a walk to a natural blue ice cave on Breiðamerkurjökull. The cave changes every winter, and the guides choose the safest one that day.

Ice Cave Discovery

The long day: an ice cave plus a hike further up Breiðamerkurjökull, roughly five to seven hours. Small groups, moderate to hard. Bring a packed lunch and good legs.

My advice before you go

• Do not do this as a day trip from Reykjavík. It is roughly five hours each way. Stay a night or two in Öræfi or near Höfn and let the glacier be the day, not a stop on a marathon.
• Pick a morning or midday tour, not the first slot. You are on vacation. Sleep in, have a proper breakfast, and arrive rested.
• Book early in your stay in the area. Weather can move or cancel a tour. A spare day gives you a second chance.
• Dress for the ice, not the car park. Wear hiking boots with ankle support, layers, a waterproof shell, a hat, and gloves. You can rent boots if you ask in advance.
• Read the cancellation terms. They differ between tours. Confirm the details with Local Guide when you book.
