Why is Perlan one of the top destinations in Reykjavik for families?
Perlan is one of the top destinations in Reykjavik. There is a good reason for this. You can see the glass dome -of Perlan from miles away, where it sits on top of a wooded hill close to the geographical center of Reykjavik. The hill, called Öskjuhlíð, is perfect for cycling or walking. In the woods, you will find rabbits who will love to get a piece of carrot or two!
Stunning view
Perlan is close to the sea and the lovely geothermally heated Nauthólsvík beach. You get a fantastic 360° view of the entire Reykjavik area from the observation deck. To the south, you will look towards the Reykjanes peninsula, where the recent eruption at Geldingadalir took place. To the north is Mt. Esja. You will look towards the western edge of Reykjavik and the Snæfellsnesjökull glacier to the west. To the east, you will see the mountain range of Bláfjöll and Hengill.
World War II connection
Perlan and its surroundings have many World War II relics; afterafter all, the nearby Reykjavik was initially built by the British during the war. British soldiers called Öskjuhlíð Howitzer hill. The reason for the nickname was apparent back then. The British had formidable defenses for the airport and the entire Reykjavik area. Remains of pillboxes, fuel tanks, bunkers, and foundations for artillery pieces are still visible today.
