The Secret Lagoon is right on the Golden Circle
The Secret Lagoon is on the Golden Circle route, where you can also find such Icelandic natural wonders as Thingvellir, Gullfoss waterfall, and the geysers at Haukadalur. The tomato farm and restaurant at Friðheimar and the caves are noteworthy nearby destinations. The selection of hotels on the Golden Circle is fantastic.
Iceland’s oldest natural pool
The Secret Lagoon is Iceland’s oldest natural pool. In Icelandic, its name is Gamla Laugin (The Old Pool). It was created in 1891 near several hot springs. These hot springs supply the pool with hot water. One of those, Litli Geysir (Small Geyser), erupts regularly. The water in the lagoon is pristine. The abundant flow of geothermal water that flows into the it, ensures that all water is replaced within 24 hours. The temperature of the mineral-rich water stays constant at around 38-40 degrees Celsius (100.4 – 104 Fahrenheit).
Historical place
What I like about the Secret Lagoon is that it is rustic but very clean. It has remains of old changing rooms nearby which remind you of the long history of this place. Long before somebody had the bright idea of putting in a pool on the site, people were washing clothes or bathing in the hot pools there. I bet the usage of geothermal water stretches at the site stretches back to the settlement of the country.
Enjoying life, romance and drinks at the Secret Lagoon
They serve drinks and snacks at the lagoon. It has to be said that there there are worse things than enjoying a cold beer in a cozy hot pool. I have visited the pool several times, and I always had a great experience. It has never been crowded, and I find being there very relaxing and romantic. Actually, it seems to me that the pool is very popular among couples on their getaways. My wife and I will be visiting soon. I will do my best not to be driving! See you there soon!
