I am just incredibly relaxed today. My skin is remarkably smooth, and my shoulders are free of the soreness and stiffness that comes with exercising, commuting with a bike every day, and working on a computer all day long. The reason, well, I visited the amazingly luxurious Sky Lagoon with my wife and a group of friends yesterday.
The Sky Lagoon almost merges into the North Atlantic ocean
The Sky Lagoon opened recently in the town of Kópavogur, right next door to Reykjavik. The lagoon sits right on the edge of the ocean, so you get an incredible view while you soak in the comfortably warm water. The vista includes Bessastaðir, the Icelandic president’s mansion, and the Reykjanes peninsula, which now supports a volcanic eruption. We joked that the view only needed a unicorn whale to jump out of the ocean at regular intervals!
Icelandic design through and through
There are now many lagoons to choose from here in Iceland. I am not going to attempt to rate them here. I love them all. However, it is safe to say that the Sky Lagoon is an incredibly luxurious option compared to many others. The lagoon itself is huge, and its architecture is just incredible. The whole design is so Icelandic if that tells you something. If I had not read that the landscape had been specially designed and created for the lagoon, it might have well been possible to convince that the lagoon had just been adapted to a rocky Icelandic shoreline! The lagoon is huge. The pool is so large that even if there are a lot of visitors there, it does not get crowded.

Showering in a waterfall
We had a good time exploring the lagoon while chatting and sipping drinks. At one end of the lagoon, a waterfall has been crafted in the ‘lava’ wall. I would have loved to have more volume of water, but it was still sufficient to pound relief into my sore shoulders. I especially loved going to the edge of the lagoon and contemplate the view out to the ocean. The infinity effect is Just beautiful!
Essential ritual in the Sky Lagoon in Iceland
We tried the 7 part ritual, which is an extra option you can book. You should always go for this addition; it is just lovely! You enter a turf house where you get various treatments. The first part was challenging for me, a large pool filled with cold water. I am just utterly averse to going into cold water!
The best way to start a Saturday
We were treated to a cold room, a sauna in a beautifully designed space with a vast window when we got inside. There is a steam room and cleansing scrub. We emerged wholly refreshed. What a way to start a Saturday evening in Reykjavik!
How to get to the Sky Lagoon
I would book online before you go to the Sky Lagoon in Iceland. Also, note that the lagoon is only for adults. The Sky Lagoon is located on the western edge of the town of Kópavogur. Use Google maps to find your way there 🙂
