I have good news for anyone planning a Golden Circle day. Stuck in Iceland has partnered with Laugarás Lagoon, the newest geothermal lagoon in the country, and my newsletter subscribers now get 5% off all three of their admission packages.

Dusk at Laugarás Lagoon, when the lanterns come on and the Iðubrú bridge lights up across the Hvítá river. This is the argument for the late-afternoon time slot.

Laugarás Lagoon opened in 2025 in the small village of Laugarás in South Iceland, right on the banks of the Hvítá river — the same glacial river that thunders over Gullfoss a little further upstream. That location is the whole point. If you are doing the classic ÞingvellirGeysir–Gullfoss loop, the lagoon sits comfortably on your route home, about 90 minutes from Reykjavík. It is also just down the road from the historic Skálholt cathedral and the Friðheimar tomato greenhouse, so you can build a very good day around it without ever feeling rushed.

What makes this one different

Iceland is not short of geothermal baths these days, so let me give you the honest picture of where this one fits.

Laugarás Lagoon is built on two levels connected by a 6.6-meter waterfall, which is a genuinely striking feature — you hear it before you see it. There is a grotto framed by basalt columns that serves as a designated quiet zone, a small forest pool tucked among the trees, two dry saunas with big windows looking out over the Hvítá valley, a cold plunge pool for the brave, and swim-up bars so you never have to leave the warm water for a drink.

Chef Gísli Matthías Auðunsson — Gísli Matt to most Icelanders — runs Ylja, the restaurant at Laugarás Lagoon. He built his reputation at Slippurinn in the Westman Islands and Skál in Reykjavík on local, seasonal Icelandic ingredients.

One more thing worth knowing: the on-site restaurant, Ylja, is run by Gísli Matthías Auðunsson — Gísli Matt to most Icelanders — the chef behind the now-sadly-closed Slippurinn in the Westman Islands and Skál in Reykjavík. The menu is seasonal and built on ingredients from nearby farms and greenhouses.

The three packages — all included in the discount

Your discount code works on all three admission tiers. The names come from Icelandic trees, if you are wondering:

Birki (Standard)

Full access to the lagoon, saunas, cold plunge, and all outdoor areas, plus changing rooms with lockers. Bring your own towel with this one.

Lerki (Premium)

Everything in Birki, plus a towel and one drink of your choice at the swim-up bar.

Ösp (Wellness)

Everything in Lerki, plus a seasonal two-course meal at Ylja.

Prices vary by date and time slot, so check their booking calendar for your travel dates.

Practical details about Laugarás Lagoon

Where: Skálholtsvegur 1, Laugarás, South Iceland — about 94 km from Reykjavík, an easy paved drive all the way.

When to go: Late afternoon works beautifully. Do the Golden Circle sights in the morning and early afternoon, then arrive at the lagoon around 5 pm. If you book the Ösp package, reserve your table at Ylja for about 90 minutes after your lagoon entry — that gives you a proper soak first.

Good to know: Children must be 8 or older and accompanied by an adult. The facility is wheelchair accessible, and shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel from their own Rjóður skincare line are provided in the showers. Plan for at least two hours; there is no time limit on your visit.
