Nobody wants to be cold, miserable, and wet on their dream vacation. Buying all the clothing items you need to stay warm and dry is expensive. But Iceland Cover changes everything because you rent the clothing or camping gear you need from them. You don’t need me to tell you this is a great service. Learn from my mistakes about outdoor clothes in Iceland so you will stay dry and warm

I have learned from the mistakes I have made when dressing for the Icelandic outdoors, so you don’t have to

And what do I know about staying warm in Icelandic weather? I have hiked all over Iceland in different seasons, been on glaciers, and I cycle to work daily, every day of the year. I have seen it all: Horizontal rain, hail or sleet, howling icy winds, snowstorms, icy fog, and slippery ice. And that is just in Reykjavik on my way to work on my bike in winter!

Fact: When your butt is frozen, you won’t enjoy your vacation

I have frozen my butt in the highlands in awful weather and learned from many mistakes. My biggest mistake was in 2005 when I  hiked the Fimmvörðuháls trail in the highlands in the high summer in an old-fashioned tracksuit. When the weather turned to horizontal sleet, zero visibility, and the temperature dropped to four degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit), I realized I was in for a rough, wet, cold ride. This experience, and many others, is why I have ample specialized clothing for the variety of weather I will encounter daily. You probably don’t need it in your everyday life. Therefore, the benefits of renting your clothes for your Iceland trip are many:

Rent outdoor clothes for your Iceland trip to get the correct type of outdoor clothes for Icelandic weather

You can be sure you’ll get the right piece of clothing for Iceland that is breathable and water-repellent. For example, Iceland Cover won’t rent you jeans or anything containing cotton. Cotton is terrible for Icelandic conditions since it soaks up wetness and cold.

Quality of the outdoor clothing items is ensured

The quality of the items is assured, and you will look good wearing them. Looking good is, of course, essential on your dream vacation in Iceland!

Camping gear for rent

If you are thinking about camping in Iceland, there is no longer any need to bring all the gear in bulky luggage.  Iceland Cover also rents tents, sleeping bags, cooking gear, crampons, and hiking poles. The same discount applies.

Simply rent all the camping gear that you might need with Iceland Cover.

Save money by renting outdoor clothes for your Iceland trip

You don’t have to buy a warm coat or pants that you will only need for Iceland. You just rent and pass the clothes on to the next person that needs them. Get more tips on saving money in Iceland.

It is convenient

You get the clothing delivered to you, saving a lot of hassle. Returning them is also easy. And you don’t need to go shopping or pack bulky clothing for your flight to and from Iceland.

Renting clothes and camping gear is environmentally friendly

Imagine how harmful it is to the environment to buy a coat or pair of pants just to use for a few days, only to end up in a cupboard for a long time.

As I said before, I am very aware of how tricky dressing is here in Iceland, and when I came across Iceland Cover, I knew I wanted them as partners. I contacted them, and Davíð Örn Ingimarsson, who owns Iceland Cover, with Sveinbjörn Traustason, was quick to respond and willing to work with me to reduce the cost of keeping my readers warm and dry in Iceland. Thank you for that, Davíð and Sveinbjörn! I took the opportunity to ask Davíð a few questions about his experience dressing and traveling in Iceland.

What items are the most popular outdoor clothes to rent?

The two most popular items are definitely the parka and hiking boots. If you could only pick two things to protect you from the weather in Iceland, it’s a parka and good hiking boots.

What are the biggest mistakes people make when packing for their trip to Iceland?

People tend to either overestimate or underestimate the weather in Iceland.

They might show up with wayyy too much stuff, enough to fill 2 full check-in bags! Or, arrive with nothing but a bomber jacket, sneakers, and a smile!

What are the fundamentals of staying warm and dry in Iceland?

Good boots, waterproof pants, and a waterproof jacket. Waterproof clothes are the name of the game here in Iceland.

What are your favorite places or activities here in Iceland?

A glacier hike is definitely a must-do. As well as kayaking in the glacier lagoon

What advice would you give those visiting Iceland for the first time?

Make sure to stop and smell the roses. Leave some time to breathe and take your time.

Renting Outdoor Clothes in Iceland — FAQ

7 questions

Is there an Iceland Cover discount code that works?
Yes. Stuck in Iceland readers get 10% off with the code STUCK, or the discount is applied automatically if you book through my partner link. I verified the code directly with Iceland Cover’s owners.
What can I rent from Iceland Cover?
Warm parkas, waterproof jackets and pants, hiking boots, gloves, and beanies — plus camping equipment like tents, sleeping bags, cooking gear, crampons, and hiking poles. The two most popular items, according to owner Davíð, are the parka and hiking boots.
How does the rental work?
Choose your items and sizes online, pick your dates, and either collect them at the store on Laugavegur in downtown Reykjavík (no extra fee) or have them delivered to your hotel in the capital area. Returns work the same way — leave the clothes at your hotel reception and they are picked up.
Is renting outdoor clothes for Iceland worth it?
If you don’t already own proper waterproof gear, yes. Quality outdoor clothing costs a small fortune to buy for one trip, fills half a suitcase, and often ends up in a cupboard afterward. Renting saves money, luggage space, and possibly a checked-bag fee — and it’s the more environmentally friendly choice.
What clothes do I actually need for Iceland?
Good boots, waterproof pants, and a waterproof jacket — waterproof is the name of the game here. Avoid cotton entirely: it soaks up wetness and cold. Layer wool or synthetics underneath. For the full rundown, see my guide on how to dress for Iceland.
What if the rented clothes don’t fit?
Iceland Cover brings extra sizes when they deliver so you can try things on, and you can always swap sizes at their store on Laugavegur 51. Tell them in advance if you’re unsure about a size and they’ll help you out.
Can I rent camping gear in Iceland too?
Yes — Iceland Cover rents full camping setups: tents from one-person up to family size, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, tables, and more. The same 10% discount applies, so you can arrive with hand luggage and still camp the Ring Road.
