Icelandic Krauma Geothermal Baths and Spa on the wish list

I and my wife visited Krauma last Easter. We had a lovely holiday with my family in my home town of Akureyri where we stayed at the lovely family-run Hótel Kjarnalundur. That hotel is run by my sister and brother. But we wanted to experience the new Krauma geothermal baths and spa Krauma on our way back home to Reykjavik. So we booked a hotel in the nearby Reykholt and headed to Krauma. The word ‘Krauma’ means something that is bubbling and boiling. Quite apt I would say.

The most relaxing room in Iceland is at Krauma geothermal baths and spa.

Drawing water from a monster hot spring

The geothermal spa and baths did not disappoint. Krauma is situated right next to the monster of a hot spring called ´Deildartunguhver.´ This best spews out some 180 liters of boiling water per second. It does not only heat up homes across the west of Iceland, it also contributes to the spa and baths. You can, of course, take a look at the hot spring but if you make the trip I would say it is a waste not to dip into Krauma as well.

Plenty of soaking options

The water and steam at Krauma are tempered by glacial water flowing from Iceland´s smallest glacier called Ok. Yes as in ‘OK.’ And there are plenty of variations in the temperatures. There are five geothermal baths and a cold tub that I did not go into as really cold water reduces me a shivering, whimpering wreck. Then there are two saunas, one intensely hot and other not so intensely hot. The hotter one is a geothermal sauna while the ‘colder’ one is a straight-up steam bath. Finally, there is my favorite, the relaxation room with a fireplace. If you are so inclined you can bring out an alcoholic beverage with you in the spa.

A new favorite spot in Iceland

I came out totally relaxed in both body and spirit and I felt so clean!  Krauma is now one of my favorite experiences here in Iceland. I suggest you give it a go as well.
