Yule draws near and there are so many festive things going on in Iceland right now. Before each Christmas, there is just a plethora of concerts and other events devoted to the festival of light. But there is one event that I would like to draw your attention to. I suspect it will be just wonderfully festive. And it will teach you all about the unique and sometimes scary legends of Icelandic Christmas.

Yule lad stealing delicious skyr from hungry children.
Yule lad stealing delicious skyr from hungry children.

It is called ‘Christmas at the Caves‘ and will take place in ancient man-made (I should say people made!) caves in the South of Iceland. They have a fascinating and mystery as you can read about in this earlier article.

The whole family can learn about the legends of Icelandic Christmas

The Christmas at the Caves tour will focus on the old and rather macabre stories of the mischevious Yule lads, their terrible troll parents and of course the monstrous Christmas cat. I think this might a  great event for families as it is all about the unique Icelandic legends around Christmas.

The Icelandic Christmas Cat
The Icelandic Christmas Cat was a furry cannibal.

So just imagine listening to those ancient tales in those mysterious caves. It just gives me goosebumps to think about it.
