Little known fact. Giantesses value cleanliness and bathe regularly. But I suppose their main issue is that there are not too many bathtubs which meet their standards. But there is one lava rock pool that is just perfect for giantess hygiene. This is, of course, Brimketill lava rock pool. This bathtub fit for a giantess is found at the south coast of the Reykjanes peninsula.

Perhaps sunscreen could have helped Oddný?

The literal translation on the word Brimketill is something like ‘surf kettle.’ It is an apt name. The pool is perched at the edge of a cliff on the edge of the ocean. In rough weather, waves wash over the pool. In good weather, this is a beautiful pool of water. There is a legend attached to the pool Brimketill. A giantess called Oddný was supposed to use the pool for bathing. She lived in a large nearby caved with her husband, Hróar, and her son Sölvi. But fate was unkind to Oddný, as she soaked in the pool one night, she forgot herself and was hit by the rising sun in the morning. She probably forgot her sunblock.

Pounding waves

When I visited Brimketill last August, it was overcast, and the waves pounded the rugged and rocky oceanfront. It is almost always windy on the beach in the Reykjanes peninsula, so consider it a bonus if you see the pool with still water. I can imagine how beautiful it must be then. In any case, it is also pretty cool to see the waves continuously pound the oceanfront and wash over the pool.

How to get to Brimketill lava rock pool

It is easy to reach Brimketill. It is a short distance from the town of Grindavík on road number 425.

Stay safe

The lava pool has an excellent viewing platform. You may get the idea of going into the pool, but I want to dissuade you from doing that. The lava rock is razor-sharp, and killer waves may wash out to the ice-cold and unforgiving North Atlantic in one fell swoop.
