One of the nice things in life is strolling around enjoying fine art.  Another thing I particularly enjoy is well-crafted apps. Yes I know it is nerdy but so be it. You can imagine I am excited to try out the brand new Reykjavik Art Walk app. The app is free to download and use. It is available for both Android and iOS devices.

Reykjavik art in your pocket

The app is published by the Reykjavik Art Museum and it enables you to discover around 200 hundred works of public art in Reykjavik that are overseen by the museum. The app gives you detailed information about the works of art, including photographs, text and audio guides.

So you can be in the middle of Reykjavik and when you see a piece of art you think is interesting, just fire up the app and look it up there. You will get full information about the piece and the artist. I think it is pretty great to have information about Reykjavik public art in your pocket at all times.

This Reykjavik sculpture is called The Musician by artist Ólöf Pálsdóttir.

The Reykjavik Art Walk app options

The app uses GPS to guide to the nearest public work of art to you. And it even has fun games featuring Reykjavik public art.

The app has the following options:

  • Map of Reykjavik where you can see your location and icons which either represent individual pieces of art or art walks.
  • Public Art – this has a list of all public works of art in Reykjavik, complete with pictures and description
  • Tours – this shows you a list of art walks. I would start with Art around the pond which takes you on a short walk around Reykjavik pond in the city center
  • Art-centered games

This article will be updated

I really look forward to trying the app. I will of course update this article when I have tried it on my own art walk around my home town of Reykjavik!
