Icelandic waterfalls and rivers are legion but there are not a lot of people that do kayaking in Iceland. One exception are the Spanish Serrasolses brothers, Aniol and Gerd. They visited Iceland this past summer and created an incredible video about their exploits of kayaking in Iceland. The video features them plunging down waterfall after waterfall. Icelandic waterfalls may look pretty but the water is always freezing cold. And there are lot of rocks involved. The kind that want to trap you in a swirling whirlpool of frigid water and smash every bone in your body. So the skill the brothers display is just incredible to me. So I was gratified when Aniol agreed to an interview, I really wanted to know what makes these daredevils tick.

So right of the bat, what makes you guys tick?

Big waterfalls and rapids they give me goose bumps when i see them … it only stops after I’ve ran them successfully. I’ve got total fear for snakes and crocodiles…

If I understand the video you have been kayaking around the world, what is your favorite location?

We have kayaked in many different parts of the World , each one is unique and special in it’s own way, very hard to choose one. But my favourites are Pakistan and Chile.

Why did you come to Iceland?

We came to shoot a video with the GoPro, we where testing and gathering footage for the release of their new camera, the GoPro 6 we spent a week traveling around the island hitting every river and waterfall we where able to find. Iceland is truly a paradise for kayakers, the waterfalls and rapids are beautiful and extremely technical. It was my second time in the island but I really wanted to have my brother discover some of these places that impressed me so much in the past.

What was it about kayaking in Iceland that surprised you the most?

There’s really no place like it, sometimes it feels like being on another planet. From the epic views in the highlands to the amazing volcanic fields, the black sand beaches. Iceland is stunning!

Can you share the favorite places in Iceland?

Aldeyjarfoss is my favorite waterfall and Keldua is my favourite river in the country. These places are very powerful, they are not super heavily visited by tourists and they have a deep meaning for me because of past experiences.

The heart must beat faster at the cusp of kayaking into a raging waterall.

Will you be returning to Iceland and if so, what are hoping to do and see?

If I ever get to return to Iceland I’d love to do more expeditions in the highlands. Most of the easy access locations have been explored already, but there’s lots of potential to find new waterfalls and rapids starting at the top of the highlands.

What advice do you have for those who are visiting Iceland for the first time?

Rent a car and pack up with camping gear so you are independent. Bring a rain jacket and warm clothes.

Be respectful with the locals, go explore and have fun !
